BehaveIQ YouTube Outlier Benchmark 2026

A comprehensive, reproducible investigation measuring relative velocity distributions and breakout multipliers across 5,000 public YouTube channels.

Study Status: Protocol & Sampling Phase Active

This document establishes the official research methodology, data definitions, and sampling framework for the 2026 YouTube Outlier Benchmark. In accordance with scientific data integrity standards, no synthetic or fabricated results are published. Aggregate statistical tables will be released following completion of the multi-quarter observation cycle.

Section 1: Research Protocol

1. Research Protocol & Study Objective

Modern YouTube video discovery is predominantly driven by algorithmic recommendations (Home Browse and Suggested feeds). However, creator education has historically lacked a reproducible mathematical standard for what constitutes an "outlier" video.

The primary objective of this benchmark is to measure the statistical distribution of outlier multipliers (e.g. 1.5x, 2x, 5x, 10x, 50x) across channel size cohorts and content verticals, establishing baseline probability thresholds for organic recommendation breakouts.

Section 2: Data Collection

2. Data Collection & Sampling Methodology

The study population comprises 5,000 public YouTube channels with active uploads during a 90-day observation window, stratified across 5 subscriber size cohorts and 10 core content verticals:

CohortSubscriber RangeTarget Channel Sample
Cohort 1: Micro< 10,000 subscribers1,000 channels
Cohort 2: Small10,000 – 50,000 subscribers1,000 channels
Cohort 3: Mid50,000 – 250,000 subscribers1,000 channels
Cohort 4: Macro250,000 – 1,000,000 subscribers1,000 channels
Cohort 5: Mega> 1,000,000 subscribers1,000 channels
10 Content Categories Evaluated: Technology, Education, Gaming, Finance & Business, Science, Lifestyle, Fitness & Health, Entertainment, Commentary/News, and How-To/Design.

Data Collection in Progress

Results pending data collection.

In strict adherence to scientific data integrity and Google Search guidance, BehaveIQ does not manufacture placeholder statistics or synthetic findings. The current empirical dataset contains 0 videos. The estimated ~150,000 video trajectories represents a mathematical projection of the planned 5,000-channel corpus over a 90-day observation window, not an observed dataset result. Full empirical benchmark distributions, percentiles, and multiplier tables will be published upon the conclusion of our multi-quarter sampling observation cycle.

Section 5: Analysis Pipeline

5. Pending Analysis Pipeline & Hypotheses

Upon conclusion of the observation period, the research pipeline will compute the following statistical models:

Hypothesis 1: Recommendation Decoupling

Testing whether the relative incidence of 3.0×+ breakout outlier multipliers is statistically independent of subscriber count across cohorts.

Hypothesis 2: Mobile Packaging Friction

Measuring the velocity delta between thumbnails meeting WCAG 3:1 luminance contrast thresholds versus low-contrast designs at 320px scale.

Section 6: Limitations

6. Methodological Limitations & Disclosures

  • Shorts vs. Long-form Isolation: Shorts are excluded using available public metadata and format/duration rules. YouTube categorizes qualifying square/vertical videos up to 3 minutes as Shorts for standard channels. The YouTube Data API v3 does not expose a universal boolean field for Shorts. Therefore, videos that cannot be confidently classified as long-form are excluded from the benchmark or flagged for review to prevent skewing long-form baseline medians.
  • Minimum Activity Threshold: Channels with fewer than 5 uploads during the 90-day observation window are excluded to ensure sufficient sample depth for establishing a reliable median baseline.
  • Missing View Counts: Any videos with disabled view counts or retracted access are purged from the statistical calculation.
  • Zero Scraped Viewer PII: No commenter handles, personal identities, or IP addresses are collected.
